As part of Bike Week this year Lewisham Council will be holding a “Get Cycling” event from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 23rd June 2007 at Powerleague Sports Ground, Canadian Avenue, Catford.  You may have seen the increasing number of people cycling and thought, I’d like to do that but there’s something holding you back.  Come along to the event and there will be bikes and people to help you into the cycle lane and out of your car.

There will be traditional bikes and some wacky ones to try out, a display team will be demonstrating cycling stunts, Dr. Bike will be there to give your own bike a check-up and carry out minor repairs, advice, information, cycle route maps, puncture repair kits, prize drawer and much more.

There won’t be any on-site parking, so if you are not yet cycling, please come by foot or public transport.  Trains to Catford and Catford Bridge. Waterlink Way cycle and walking route. Buses 75, 171, 181, 185, 202, 284, 336 stop outside Powerleague.  Buses 47, 54, 124,136,160,199,208 stop a short walk away. The event is free to the community and funded by Lewisham Council and Transport for London.  For more details contact Jackie Short 0208 314 2187 or www.lewisham.gov.uk or www.bikeweek.org.uk

Report

Get Cycling is Lewisham Council’s big event to promote cycling and is funded by Transport for London.

As well as the information stall manned by Lewisham Cyclists there was also an information stall manned by Lewisham Council, Chris compton’s Cycles, security cycle marking done by the Community Support officers, the M.A.D. bmx display team and the Company of Cyclists with their crazy array of bikes for anyone and everyone to try out.

Business at our information stall was steady if not busy. This year there seemed to be less ignorance of the main cycle routes in the borough, most were aware of the Waterlink Way. People were mainly concerned about cycling on busy roads and especially concerned about letting their children do so. All wanted to see more specific cycle routes in the borough exclusively for the use of cyclists.

The busiest people of the day were The Company of Cyclists. I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that actually riding a bike and the enjoyment it gives should prove to be the main attraction.
