Meet at Ladywell Fields

North gate on Ladywell BridgeTime: 2.00pm – 5.30pm

After our successful family ride in March, we hope again for good weather and a fun day out, this time exploring the north of the borough and the River Thames.  Children should be accompanied by parents or guardians.  At our last family ride, the age range was 6 to 78 years!

We will follow mostly off-road routes from Ladywell to Deptford, ride along the Thames path to Woolwich Thames Barrier (and back again).   There is a café at the Barrier where we can stop for tea and snacks.   We may have time to visit the Thames barrier exhibition (£1.50 adult, £1 conc., 75p children).  Aim to return to Ladywell by 5.30pm.

Sunblock and water recommended.  Please bring waterproofs as weather can be unpredictable.  Bring helmets if you have them, a puncture repair kit and please make sure your bikes are roadworthy.  We will provide cycle maps.

Those who wish to continue riding after 5.30pm are welcome to come to a picnic in Greenwich Park to celebrate the end of Bike Week (starting 6.30pm).

Report

Despite competing against the England world cup game this afternoon, we mustered a respectable ten riders of varied agaes for our trip to the Woolwich Thames Barrier.

We followed the Waterlink Way from Ladywell Fields to the Thames Path at Creek Road, using this mostly traffic free route.  We had to walk our bikes (and one tandem) through the old Naval College grounds.  We then rejoined the Thames Path, heading past the Millennium Dome, ecology centre, Greenwich Yacht club, and eventually reaching the shimmering silver-coated piers of the Thames Barrier.  Interesting fact:  apparently the rotating drum design of the barrier was originally inspired by a gas cooker knob!

Following the same route back, we picked up news of England's winning goal against Equador whilst cycling through the deserted streets of Deptford and Ladywell.

Altogether an enjoyable and rewarding ride.

Thanks to everyone who came along and look out for news of future family rides.
