Introduction Summary Lewisham Council: A lot of talk, but little real commitment? The council is keen to promote the idea of cycling. However, they seriously lag behind other London boroughs in terms of cycle spending per capita and implementing their cycle strategy. Lewisham Council still has a passive attitude towards cycling. Perhaps they think London-wide trends of increased cycling just happening in Lewisham without any dedicated effort or extra funding. Without an immediate change in funding and political will, Lewisham is extremely unlikely to reach its target of quadrupling the numbers of cycling trips by 2012. The recent increase in the cycling budget and promotion of cycle training are steps in the right direction but is it a case of too little, too late? If you have a suggestion for a new cycle route, or want to comment on an existing cycle lane, dodgy junction, or perhaps you want some cycle training? Why not write to someone in Lewisham Council and tell them about it? Perhaps you just want to remind them that cycling is greatly underrepresented and under-funded in Lewisham. If you already cycle or want to cycle, you should have a say in how the money is spent. We pay their wages, so they work for us!
