Introduction
This
webpage provides information on what Lewisham Council thinks and does
about cycling needs in Lewisham, and some facts and figures on spending,
numbers of cycle trips in the Borough and future targets. It presents
the Council's strategy and commitment to increasing the number of trips
made by cycle. It also provides information on what the council currently
does for cycling in the borough and compares this with other local boroughs.
Lastly, we present some suggestions to the Council for consideration.
As of 2005, implementation of the Cycle strategy (below)
has been slow. Serious communication problems exist between council departments,
planners and ‘partners' including Lewisham Cyclists. Cycle routes are
poorly maintained, consultation is often ignored, few new initiatives
are being proposed, and there is little internal monitoring of cycle
related issues. There is still no dedicated Cycling Officer in Lewisham.
One questions whether the Council is fully embracing its Cycling Strategy,
and will ever hope to reach its target to quadruple the number of cycle
trips by 2012.
Lewisham Cyclists would like to see the following changes in
Lewisham
- the appointment of a dedicated
cycling officer.
- a positive attitude and active approach
to cycling within the council.
- increasedfunding for cycle initiatives
from TfL and the council.
- improved communication between
council departments and with local groups (including Lewisham Cyclists).
